Netflix had an anime problem, and it was largely one of their own making. Years of Americanising Japanese content (the live-action Death Note being the most visible casualty) had positioned the platform as a cultural tourist in a community that punishes inauthenticity with surgical precision. Internally, the result was paralysis; marketing teams were genuinely afraid to promote their own catalogue. Through an extensive ethnographic investigation into anime fandom across APAC, I traced the roots of the community's fierce gatekeeping back to Taiwan's Comic Code era, uncovered the concept of 獵奇 (liè qí; the deliberate pursuit of the strange and challenging) as the organising principle of fandom, and used Bourdieu's theories of taste distinction to decode the cultural hierarchies that Netflix had been inadvertently violating. The strategy that emerged didn't just change how Netflix marketed anime; it changed how they understood it. The campaign platform ("Watch At Your Own Risk") transformed the community's gatekeeping instincts from a threat into a strategic asset, and helped establish adult animated content as something the platform took seriously rather than something it tolerated.
"Honestly, the anime community terrifies me."
That was Netflix's APAC Marketing Lead, and she wasn't being hyperbolic. By the time I arrived, the relationship between Netflix and the anime community had curdled into something pretty dysfunctional. The platform had spent heavily on acquiring and producing anime content; the investment was significant, the catalogue was deep, the ambition was real. But the marketing teams responsible for promoting that content had essentially retreated into a defensive crouch.
To understand why, you need to understand what had gone wrong. And what had gone wrong was, in hindsight, entirely predictable.
Netflix had approached anime the way it approached most content categories: through the lens of accessibility and scale. Make it approachable. Broaden the audience. Remove barriers to entry. In most categories, this instinct serves them well. In anime, it was catastrophic.
The live-action Death Note adaptation was the most visible failure; a beloved, psychologically complex Japanese property Americanised into something that satisfied neither existing fans nor the new audiences it was supposedly designed to attract. But Death Note was a symptom, not the disease. The underlying problem was systematic: Netflix's marketing teams were consistently misreading the cultural grammar of what they were selling. Sophisticated seinen (adult-oriented) titles were being positioned as shounen (youth) content. Story arcs were being misrepresented in trailers and thumbnails to make them look more accessible. The algorithmic logic of "if you liked this accessible thing, try this darker thing" was flattening distinctions that the community considered fundamental.
Each misstep was met with immediate, articulate, and very public backlash. The anime community doesn't just complain; it dismantles. Forum threads and social media posts would forensically catalogue every error, every mischaracterisation, every sign that the platform didn't understand what it was handling. And the community's memory is long. Past failures weren't forgiven; they were filed and referenced every time Netflix attempted something new.
The rational response, if you were a marketing team operating under normal commercial pressures, was to stop taking risks. And that's exactly what happened. Powerful titles sat buried in the catalogue. Safer, more accessible shows got the promotional push. The anime collection became something Netflix technically had but functionally didn't know what to do with; an expensive library with no librarian willing to recommend the interesting books.
The Archaeology of Gatekeeping
The brief was about marketing strategy. But you can't develop a strategy for engaging with a community you don't understand, and Netflix's understanding of anime fandom was, at that point, dangerously shallow. They knew the community was passionate and protective. They didn't know why; not in any way that was historically grounded or culturally specific enough to be useful.
My investigation started where most people wouldn't think to look: the political history of manga and anime in Taiwan.
Between 1966 and 1987, Taiwan's Comic Code operated as a form of cultural suppression; a regulatory framework that effectively crushed local manga production in favour of state-approved content. What it couldn't suppress was demand. The result was that Japanese manga and anime didn't just survive in Taiwan during this period; they thrived underground. Fandom became intertwined with cultural resistance. Consuming this content wasn't just entertainment; it was a quiet act of defiance against institutional authority that told you what you should and shouldn't be reading.
This matters because it established a template that echoes through anime fandom to this day, even among audiences who have no direct connection to that history. The community's fierce protectiveness isn't arbitrary snobbery (though it can certainly look that way from the outside). It's an inherited cultural posture; a deep-seated instinct that this content has been misunderstood, undervalued, and mishandled by mainstream institutions before, and that the community's role is to defend it from being diluted or domesticated.
Netflix, a Western streaming platform attempting to package anime for mass consumption, was triggering exactly that instinct. Every act of simplification read as an act of disrespect. Every attempt to make content "accessible" confirmed the community's suspicion that the platform saw anime as raw material to be processed for a general audience rather than a sophisticated cultural form to be engaged with on its own terms.
獵奇: The Pursuit of Difficulty
The ethnographic research surfaced a concept that reframed my entire understanding of what anime fans actually value: 獵奇 (liè qí).
The term translates roughly as "the deliberate pursuit of the strange and challenging," but translation doesn't capture its full weight. 獵奇 describes an orientation toward culture; a preference not just for dark or complex content, but for content that demands something of you. Content that requires background knowledge to fully appreciate. Content that doesn't explain itself. Content that trusts you to keep up.
This was the fundamental misalignment. Netflix's institutional instinct was to lower barriers. The community's defining characteristic was that it valued barriers. Not as obstacles, but as markers of investment and commitment. The "difficulty" of certain anime; its narrative complexity, its cultural specificity, its refusal to hold your hand; wasn't a problem to be solved. It was the point. It was what made the content worth caring about and what made the community worth belonging to.
The anime fans I studied didn't consume content passively. They accumulated it; strategically, competitively, and with genuine intellectual seriousness. Knowing the difference between seinen and shounen wasn't pedantry; it was basic literacy. Understanding a show's lineage (which manga it adapted, which studio produced it, how the adaptation differed from the source material) was cultural capital in the Bourdieuian sense; a form of knowledge that positioned you within the community's hierarchy.
This is where Bourdieu's theories of taste distinction became genuinely illuminating rather than merely academic. The anime community's notorious debates (subtitles versus dubs being the most visible) weren't really about linguistic preference. They were sophisticated mechanisms for establishing and maintaining cultural hierarchy. Preferring subtitles signalled a willingness to engage with content on its own terms; to accept the friction of reading while watching as the price of authenticity. Preferring dubs signalled (in the community's internal logic) a desire for convenience over fidelity; a willingness to let someone else do the cultural translation for you.
Netflix had been operating on the dub side of this divide, metaphorically speaking, in everything they did. Every decision optimised for accessibility. Every marketing choice prioritised ease of entry. And every one of those choices, however commercially rational, positioned the platform lower in the community's hierarchy of cultural seriousness.
From Fear to Respect
The strategic challenge was twofold. Externally, Netflix needed to earn credibility with a community that had extensive and well-documented reasons to distrust them. Internally, Netflix needed to move from paralysis to confidence; to stop being afraid of the community and start understanding it well enough to engage with genuine respect.
The internal transformation was, in some ways, the more important achievement. The marketing teams' fear wasn't irrational; it was a reasonable response to repeated failures. But it was paralysing, and it was leading to worse outcomes than the failures themselves. A platform that's afraid to promote its own content is a platform that's wasting its investment and, worse, confirming the community's suspicion that it doesn't really care about the material.
The research gave the teams something they hadn't had before: a framework for understanding why things had gone wrong, not just that they had. When you understand that the community's gatekeeping is rooted in a history of cultural resistance, it stops feeling like hostility and starts feeling like something you can respect and work with. When you understand that 獵奇 is the organising principle of fandom, you stop trying to sand the edges off content and start presenting those edges as the reason to watch.
This is the shift that made the external strategy possible. You can't authentically engage with a community you're afraid of. But you can authentically engage with one you've taken the time to understand.
Watch At Your Own Risk
The campaign platform emerged directly from the ethnographic work.
One of the most consistent findings was how fans talked about their early encounters with anime. The stories almost always involved transgression: watching something they weren't supposed to, discovering content that adults would have disapproved of, finding material that felt genuinely dangerous or challenging in ways that other media didn't. Parents' concerns, teachers' disapproval, friends' bewilderment; these weren't embarrassing memories. They were origin stories. Badges of honour. The moment you realised this was something different; something that took you seriously enough to disturb you.
"Watch At Your Own Risk" captured this precisely. It worked on multiple levels simultaneously, which is what made it effective rather than merely clever.
At the most literal level, it was a content warning and a promise: this material is dark, complex, and potentially unsettling. We're not going to pretend otherwise. For existing fans, this was a signal of respect; an acknowledgment that the content's intensity was a feature, not something to be apologised for or marketed around.
At a second level, it spoke to the investment barrier. Some of this content requires background knowledge. Some of it demands sustained attention across dozens of episodes. Some of it won't make sense immediately. The "risk" isn't just that you might be disturbed; it's that you might get lost, might not understand, might have to do the work. And the platform was saying: that's fine. That's what makes it worth watching.
At a third level, it was an act of institutional self-awareness. Netflix was effectively acknowledging its own history of getting this wrong. Not through an apology (which would have been performative and would have invited further criticism) but through a demonstrated change in posture. The platform that had spent years trying to make anime accessible was now actively warning you that it might not be. The shift from "anyone can enjoy this" to "this isn't for everyone, and that's what makes it special" was precisely the kind of cultural repositioning that the community needed to see before it would consider taking Netflix seriously again.
What Changed
The impact went beyond a single campaign. The deeper achievement was shifting how Netflix understood the category internally; from content to be cautiously managed to content to be championed with confidence. The marketing teams who had been paralysed by fear of community backlash now had a genuine cultural framework for making decisions: not "will this upset people?" but "does this demonstrate understanding?"
The role that adult animated content now occupies on Netflix; taken seriously, promoted prominently, treated as prestige rather than niche; didn't happen by accident. It required a fundamental change in how the platform related to the material and the community around it. The research provided the understanding. The strategy provided the confidence. And "Watch At Your Own Risk" provided something the anime community hadn't seen from Netflix before: evidence that the platform finally understood that the difficulty was the point.
There's a broader lesson here about how Western platforms engage with non-Western cultural forms. The instinct to democratise, to make accessible, to remove friction; this is deeply embedded in Silicon Valley product thinking, and it works brilliantly in many contexts. But when you're engaging with a culture that has built its identity around the value of difficulty, around the pride of earned knowledge, around the memory of having been mishandled by institutions before; accessibility isn't generosity. It's erasure. The brands that earn credibility in these spaces are the ones willing to meet the culture where it is, rather than where they wish it was.
